Introduction of the Engineering Research Center of Polyploid Fish Reproduction and Breeding of Ministry of Education



The Engineering Research Center of Polyploid Fish Reproduction and Breeding of Ministry of Education was built since in 2009. Now the research center has National Key Disciplines of Developmental Biology, National "Project 211" Key Construction Disciplines, Characteristics and Advantages of Key Disciplines of Hunan Province, Province State Key Laboratory Breeding Base, Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education, Key Laboratory of Hunan Province, Genetic Breeding Center of Common carp and Crucian carp of Agriculture Ministry, Genetic Breeding Center of Fish of Hunan province, "Fish genetic breeding" cooperative demonstration Base of Colleague in Hunan Province. The research center has many advantage instruments and equipments such as Transmission and scanning electron microscopy, Live cell workstation, Automatic microscopy, Real-time PCR machine, Flow cytometry, DNA sequencing system, Microscopic image processing system, Gel electrophoretic image processing system, Automatic amino acid analyzer, Refrigerated centrifuge of Eppendorf, Ultra-low temperature freezer (-80��) and so on.

The research center has strong research forces, including an academician in Academy of Engineering, a national outstanding contribution expert, a winner of "National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars", two winners of "Lotus Scholar" of Hunan Province, a professor who won "Hundred Talents Program" of Hunan Province, a winner of "Trans-Century Training Program" and a winner of "new-Century Training Program", a winner of "National outstanding teacher", two middle-aged backbone teachers, two outstanding young experts in Hunan Province, four experts who obtained the State Council special allowance, with 11 doctorate teachers. Currently the research center is training 50 PHD and masters. The center has many subjects like the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, key programs of National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Natural Science Fund for Major international cooperation, National Program on Key Basic Research Project (973 Program), National High-tech R&D Program of China (863 Program), Innovative Research Team of Hunan Province, the Doctoral Fund of Ministry of Education of China, the National Special Fund for Scientific Research in public benefits, the Fund Project for Transformation of Scientific and Technological Achievements from the Ministry of Science and Technology and so on. The center has published many papers related to fish genetics breeding, 53 research papers on SCI journals which include Genetics, PloS ONE, Current Molecular Medicine��Marine Biotechnology��General and Comparative Endocrinology , Amino Acid, Aquaculture, Cell and Tissue Research and so like. The center has won Second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress for the research on new and improved polyploidy fishes and their application (2011), First prize of Science and Technology Progress of Hunan province for the research on new and improved polyploidy fishes (2008) and 16 national patents, and the No.2 XiangYun crucian carp and hybrids fish of blunt snout bream and yellow tail dense xenocypris have obtained New varieties of aquatic certificate of the national agriculture ministry.

The main research direction of the Center is the development of new and improved polyploid fish and their popularization and application. In recent years, taking advantage of the improved tetraploids and improved diploid crucian carp, the center have produce about 2.3 billion improved triploid crucian carp fish mainly in No.2 XiangYun crucian carp. The improved triploid fish have so many advantages such as infertility, high survival rate, body beautiful, good fresh quality, strong resistance, fast growth rate and few small thorn to promote aquaculture that they are widely cultured in our country and have generated great economic, social and ecological benefits. In addition, the engineering center have also bred many other good stock with great significant value in aquaculture, including hybrids of blunt snout bream and topmouth culter, the new tetraploid triploid, crucian, pentaploid hybrids of red crucian carp and blunt snout bream, improved allotetraploid hybrids, the gynogenetic and androgenetic diploid cloning strains of allotetraploid hybrids, improved color crucian carp, improved grey crucian carp, improved goldfish, gynogenetic Japanese crucian carp, red crucian carp, grass carp, blunt snout bream, carp and goldfish, diploid and triploid hybrids of blunt snout bream and yellow tail dense xenocypris, diploid and triploid hybrids of blunt snout bream and topmouth culter, diploid and triploid hybrids of grass carp and blunt snout bream and so on. The biological characteristics of these newly formed fish are distinctive, the living space ranges from the upper layer to the bottom layer; the feeding habit including carnivorous habit and plant based diet; some strains have great aquaculture prospect with the characteristics of complete sterility, fast growth rate, strong stress resistance, good flesh quality; the other have great ornamental prospect with the characteristics of good appearance and graceful posture. The various hybrid strains provide enough resources for fish eco-dimensional culture.
