The Laboratory of Protein Chemistry & Proteomics was established in 1991. The principal investigator is Prof. Songping Liang. There are 10 researchers including 6 senior scientists with PhD degrees in the lab. Our research interests cover (1) the structure and function of spider peptide toxins and (2) proteomics of membrane proteins. We have built up a systematic platform integrating biochemical, molecular biology, electrophysiological and proteomic techniques. We have identified tens of spider peptide toxins acting on voltage-gated ion channels and some of these toxins have been used as probes for exploring ion channels and leads for drug developments. We have also developed several methods to efficiently purify and identify membrane proteins and protein complexes. These methods have been widely cited and used by many other labs.
