From May 27th to June 16th, organized by the Ministry of Education and China Education Association for International Exchange(CEAIE), and funded by Li Zhaoji Foundation and Pei Hwa Foundation, the “Double First-rate" research group of "Overseas Study Program for 1000 Central and Western University Presidents" visited Britain. Jiang Hongxin, president of HNU, participated in the research group and served as its head.
Twenty members, including the leaders of eighteen “Double First-rate” universities in Shanxi, Neimeng, Liaoning, Hunan, Hainan, Yunnan, Gansu, Qinghai, Ningxia and Xinjiang provinces, as well as staff in relevant departments and bureau of the Ministry of Education consist the research group.
Before the visit, a five-day discussion and training was organized by the Ministry of Education in National Academy of Education Administration. The research group was lectured by professors from the Ministry of Education, Peking University and other institutions. Focusing on the theme of “learning from the beneficial experiences of British universities to grasp the essential characteristics of world-class universities”, the research group aimed to meet the needs of Chinese education based on the actual condition of China.
During the visit, the study group participated in lectures, site visits, seminars and information query. They successively visited nine high-level universities(including Coventry University, Cambridge University, University of Reading, Heriot-Watt University, University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh Napier University, Oxford University, University College London and University of Queen Mary), the British Council and Edinburgh Department of Education and Science. Forty professors and officials from British Research Assessment Exercise(RAE) committee, British Universities committee, Scotland Funding Council (SFC) and universities gave over 30 seminars and lectures to the research group. They made a deep discussion on the development of high-level universities, interdisciplinary research, transformation of scientific research achievements and talent training.
In Cambridge University and the British Council, president Jiang made an address in English to introduce the process of exploration and achievements of building Chinese “Double First-rate” universities. In London, the research group was greeted by Minister Counselor of Education, Wang Yongli of the Chinese Embassy in Britain. Wang highly affirmed the achievements of the research group, saying that the Embassy in Britain would give full support to develop "Double First-crate" universities in the central and western regions, and make new contributions to the exchanges and practices between schools.
During his visit, president Jiangintroduced to Britishuniversities the concrete methods and beneficial experiences in developing HNU into a "Double First-class" university and actively build the cooperation on work of introducing high-level talents, cross-disciplinary research, Chinese-foreign cooperation in running schools, and so on.
Based on his deep thinking, president Jiang wrote "Reference from British universities inthe development of‘Double First-rate’ universities”, and gave a report on behalf of the research group at the homecoming seminar in National Academy of Education Administration. His report was highly recognized and praised by the Ministry of Education, State Administration of Foreign Affairs, National Institute of Educational Administration, China Education Association for International Exchange, and many otherresearch groups in the "Overseas Study Program for 1000 Central and Western University Presidents", which went to the United States, Britain, Canada,Australia or other countries.
